available the database of Lanark County records from the herbarium of Queen’s University. Mike also
checked the identification of over 100 of my voucher specimens of grasses and sedges. Stephen Darbyshire,

I would like to thank several former colleagues (all now retired) from the Canadian Museum of Nature,

notes available, provided printouts of records from the Museum’s plant database, and helped locate some

Patsie Rothschild (formerly of Sheridans Rapids) made many important discoveries, took me to special

the northern portion of the county and contributed many records to this list. Adolf's enthusiasm for botanizing
new places and finding new plants helped to keep me interested in the checklist project during the early

on her recent inventory work in several parts of the county—and took the author to several special locations.
Graham Page of Ottawa and Kristl Walek (formerly of North Gower) contributed many recent county records

provided a number of new records and took the author to several special locations. Howard Clifford of the
(now-closed) Alba Wilderness School, Flower Station, took the author to a number of diverse areas on his

SPECIAL PLANTS

“Special Plants” is a broad term used to refer to all the plant taxa inventoried by the
Department of Fish and Wildlife’s California Natural Diversity Database (CNDDB), regardless
of their legal or protection status. Special Plants include vascular plants and high priority
bryophytes (mosses, liverworts, and hornworts). A few lichens are also tracked. Special Plant
taxa are species, subspecies, or varieties that fall into one or more of the following categories:
- Officially listed by California or the Federal Government as Endangered, Threatened, or
Rare;
- A candidate for state or federal listing as Endangered, Threatened, or Rare;
- Taxa which meet the criteria for listing, even if not currently included on any list, as
described in Section 15380 of the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) Guidelines;
these taxa may indicate “None” under listing status, but note that all CNPS Rank 1 and 2
and some Rank 3 and 4 plants may fall under Section 15380 of CEQA.
- A Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, or U.S. Forest Service
Sensitive Species;
- Taxa listed in the California Native Plant Society’s Inventory of Rare and Endangered
Plants of California;
- Taxa that are biologically rare, very restricted in distribution, or declining throughout their
range but not currently threatened with extirpation;
- Population(s) in California that may be peripheral to the major portion of a taxon’s range
but are threatened with extirpation in California; and
- Taxa closely associated with a habitat that is declining in California at a significant rate (e.g.
wetlands, riparian, vernal pools, old growth forests, desert aquatic systems, native
grasslands, valley shrubland habitats, etc.).

This list contains taxa that are actively inventoried by the CNDDB (Note: Taxa
mapped in the GIS have a “yes” in the right column of the list) as well as an almost
equal number of taxa (mostly Rare Plant Rank 3 and 4) which we track but for
which we only currently have quad and county level geographic information. For
the latter taxa, we maintain site and other information in manual files along with Internet
access to the quad and county level information via our “CNDDB Quick Viewer.” These
plants will be mapped as time permits or when we have enough information to determine that
they fulfill our rarity and/or endangerment criteria. For more copies of this list or other

California Heritage (CNDDB) Element Ranking
For Plants

All Heritage Programs, such as the California Natural Diversity Database (CNDDB) use the
same ranking methodology, originally developed by The Nature Conservancy and now
maintained and recently revised by NatureServe. It includes a Global rank (G rank),
describing the rank for a given taxon over its entire distribution and a State rank (S rank),
describing the rank for the taxon over its state distribution. For subspecies and varieties, there
is also a “T” rank describing the global rank for the subspecies. The second page of this
document details the criteria used to assign element ranks, from G1 to G5 for the Global rank
and from S1 to S5 for the State rank. Procedurally, state programs such as the CNDDB develop
the State ranks and the Global ranks collaboratively among states/provinces containing the
species. NatureServe then checks for consistency and logical errors at the national level.
An element rank is assigned using standard criteria and rank definitions. This standardization
makes the ranks comparable across organism and political boundaries. NatureServe has
developed a “rank calculator” to help increase repeatability and transparency of the ranking
process. The three main categories that are taken into consideration when assigning an
element rank are rarity, threats, and trends. Within these three categories, various factors are
taken into consideration including:
Range extent, area of occupancy, population size, number of occurrences and number of
good occurrences (ranked A or B). Environmental specificity can also be used if other
information is lacking.
Overall threat impact as well as intrinsic vulnerability (if threats are unknown).
Long-term and short-term trends.

With the above considerations in mind, refer below for the numerical definitions for G1-5 and
S1-5. An element’s ranking status may be adjusted up or down depending upon the
considerations above.

Abstract. The Guianas (French Guiana, Suriname, Guyana) are probably one of the
last areas of the world covered largely by virgin lowland rain forest. Species diversity
of epiphytic bryophytes was investigated in dry evergreen forest and mixed forest using
mountaineering techniques to ascend into the canopy. The results indicate that the
lowland rain forest is richer in species than previously believed due to neglect of the
canopy flora, which may hold more than 50% of the local species. The mixed forest
holds the richest flora and on one single forest tree up to 67 bryophyte species were
found (50 on average); 28 trees yielded 154 species. A species/area curve indicates that
epiphytic bryophyte species are usually commonly distributed in the forest and a few
trees may yield much of the local flora.
A recent checklist of the Guianas includes over 600 species of bryophytes: 375
Hepaticae and 234 Musci. As the region lacks in altitude (except on Mt. Roraima) the
general character of the bryophyte flora of the Guianas is typically lowland neotropical.
Over 80% of the species are rather widespread in tropical America (Amazonian species
included), and the remaining are Guayana Highlands, northern Amazonian or Caribbean
elements. Endemism is very low: 2.5 %.

Contributions from the United States National Herbarium, volume 55, 584 pages. This volume contains a checklist of the plants of the Guiana Shield Area (northeastern South America) produced using information gathered from historical and recent collections as well as many recent expeditions. The Guiana Shield, as treated here, includes the countries of Guyana and Surinam, French Guiana (a part of France) and the Venezuelan states of Amazonas, Bolivar, and Delta Amacuro. The checklist contains 257 vascular plant families with 13,367 species. According to the list 6,791 of those species are from Amazonas, 6,669 from Bolívar, 1,651 from Delta Amacuro, 7,112 from Guyana, 4,984 from Surinam, and 5,406 are from French Guiana. Of these species, 293 (2.2%) are estimated to be introduced and naturalized and even fewer are invasive. The small number of naturalized species is a good indication of the large amount of intact vegetation from this area of South America. The largest family is the Leguminoseae with 146 genera containing 1032 species; 41 families are represented by only one species. Over 250 scientists from around the world participated in this project by identifying specimens and checking species lists. This volume should be of use to students, taxonomists, ecologists, and conservation biologists, as well as to interested amateurs.
