National Botanical Garden of Georgia

The National Botanical Garden of Georgia (former Tbilisi Botanical Garden) is a leading research, cultural-educational and nature conservation institution in the country.
The National Botanical Garden (NBGG) has a long history; its predecessor was a royal botanical garden established in the early XVII c in the lower part of r. Tsavkisistskali gorge (frequently referred to as “Leghvtakhevi” – Fig gorge) located south of the historical part of the city. The royal garden collections comprised ornamental and medicinal plants. It was assigned a formal status of botanical garden in 1845.
The NBGG occupies approximately 98 ha. Its terrain is hilly; the lowest altitude is 417 m amsl at the historical quarter of Abanotubani (quarter of bathhouses), the highest altitude – 714 m amsl at village of Shindisi on Tabori ridge. Mean annual air temperature is 17C on the territory of the garden, which exceeds mean annual air temperature of Tbilisi by 0.4; however, the garden provides a cooler environment in July-August (hottest months in Tbilisi). The absolute minimum temperature is -17C in the garden; absolute maximum - 39C. Average annual precipitation comprises 518 mm; relative annual air humidity reaches 77%. The soils found in the garden are diverse; however, the soil is improved on larger part of the garden.
At present the garden collections include over 4,500 species and infraspecific taxa of the flora of the Caucasus and other regions of the world. Apart from the above, the garden supports rich collections of ornamental cultivars.
Fragments of the natural vegetation characteristic to East Georgia are preserved in the NBGG.
A number of historical monuments and landmarks still survive on the territory and in the neighborhood of Tbilisi Botanical Garden such as Narikala fortress, remnants of ancient water pipelines, Queen Tamar’s bridge, etc. Thus, the garden represents a significant site of cultural heritage.
